Deister and Marienburg Palace

Fragrant green beech forests interspersed with hills offering magnificent views of the vast Calenberger Land landscape - the Deister is the first major elevation in the North German lowlands. Whether for picking wild garlic or hiking, horse riding or simply going for a walk, the Deister offers a wide range of activities. It is particularly popular with mountain bikers. But to reduce the Deister to just its forests would not do it justice. It has so much more to offer: Healing springs in the surrounding area, old castles and monasteries as witnesses to a rich cultural landscape, mining museums and an enchanting open-air theatre. Although it can be circumnavigated by bike in about 80 kilometres, the low mountain range is extremely diverse: Some valleys are reminiscent of the foothills of the Alps, while dense forests are more reminiscent of the Harz Mountains.
